Students perfect their bedside manner at medical careers roadshow

Pupils from Northampton International Academy learned how to perform a range of medical procedures as part of a special careers roadshow.

The event was hosted by the organisation Medical Mavericks and aimed to provide information about the different careers in health.

Students from Years 9 and 10 and sixth formers learned to take blood from a fake arm, record their own ECG, try key hole surgery, see inside their body with an ultrasound machine and take a picture of the inside of their eye.

Medical Mavericks 2They were able to learn more about careers in medicine, including lesser known fields such as biomedical science, medical engineering and physiology, and find out what grades they need at GCSE to pursue different medical career paths.

Karen Betty, careers advisor at Northampton International Academy, said: “Medical Mavericks hosted a brilliant event for us here at the school to showcase the various different career paths available within the healthcare industry.

“There are a whole range of options open to students who have an interest in medicine and biology, and not all of those professions require straight As, showing our pupils of all abilities that there are opportunities for everyone interested in this field.

“It was a fantastic event and the pupils really enjoyed learning how to perform the different medical procedures.”
