Students from across the Northampton area put their diplomacy skills to the test at a mock United Nations summit event.
Year 8 pupils from Northampton International Academy, Northampton School for Boys, The Duston School and Campion School were tasked with finding a resolution about how the world should deal with child refugees at the mock summit, which took place at The Guildhall in Northampton today (Monday 18th June).
Each school provided three delegations of four students and each delegation was assigned a member nation to represent.
The aim of the event was to provide the students with experience of presenting an idea and convincing their peers of their point of view.
Michelle Llabani, international dimension lead and head of modern foreign languages at Northampton International Academy, organised the event.
The focus of our mock summit was to encourage the students to debate the issue of how the world deals with child refugees and to come to a resolution as a group. The delegates were challenged to research their assigned country and then to represent their country’s views – even if they didn’t necessarily agree with them.
I’m delighted with how committed the students were to taking on the roles we assigned them and putting forward some really convincing arguments. Hopefully this will be the first of many ‘international’ enterprises with other local schools

Annisa Chopra, a student at Northampton International Academy, was among the delegates representing China.
We had to do some research about our country, consider how we would deal with child refugees and then take part in a debate with other schools. It was a really good thing to be a part of and felt much more real than if we’d just done the debate in a classroom
