Relationships and Sex Education Policy consultation

East Midlands Academy Trust is reviewing its Relationships and Sex Education Policy ahead of new guidance from the Department for Education coming into effect this September.

Relationships education is compulsory in all primary schools in England, and relationships and sex education is compulsory in all secondary schools.

As a Trust, we must have a policy that outlines what we will teach and how we will deliver relationships and sex education to the appropriate year groups.

The policy must:

  • Define the subjects being taught (Relationships Education, RSE, sex education)
  • Set out the subject content, how it is taught and who is responsible for teaching it
  • Describe how the subject is monitored and evaluated.
  • Include information to clarify parental right to request their child is excused

Each school will include in their RSE policy, published on their website, their own monitoring arrangements.

Our draft Relationships and Sex Education Policy was approved by our Board of Trustees in April 2020 and we are now holding a public consultation period to gather the views of parents, staff and the wider community. This feedback will be taken into account before a final policy is ratified by our Board in July.

Due to COVID19 social distancing guidelines, we are conducting the consultation online. However we are hoping to have face to face sessions once the restrictions are lifted, and schools will contact parents directly about this.

Please take time to read our consultation documents and draft Relationships and Sex Education Policy below, and then share any views you have using this online form:

The consultation closes on July 10th 2020, so please submit any comments using the online form by this date.

If you have any questions you wish to ask before completing our questionnaire, you can email consultation@emat.uk. Please include your child’s name and school.
